Glossary of eLearning Terminology

For those who are unfamiliar with the eLearning industry, the amalgamation of foreign terms may be hugely intimidating. At New Leaf Technologies, we advise that clients who are unaccustomed to the relevant terminology should start here. The terms which follow are widely used with reference to all forms of online learning and understanding them is pivotal to making the right decisions for your eLearning journey.

Adaptive Learning: The acclimatisation of a computer-based learning program to an individual, based on their respective score and responses.

Asynchronous Learning: The freedom for students to learn the same content at different places, times and paces. This is the opposite of synchronous learning, which is when students learn in unison, typically classroom-style learning.

Blended Learning: A combination of online and in-person learning techniques and activities, as well as a blend of content formats.

Cloud Based Learning: The storage of educational content in an internet-based repository so that educational content can be readily available on any device, at any location with an internet connection.

Collaborative Learning: Exchanging ideas, resources and skills in order to learn in a group.

Edtech: Shorthand for education technology – the evolution and enhancement of the learning experience with the aid of technology.

eLearning: A broad term which refers to any form of learning which takes place using an electronic device, either via computer software or cloud-based platforms.

Flipped classroom: Learning which typically takes place in a physical classroom is alternatively distributed online.

Gamification: A technique which applies game-like scenarios to non-game activities in order to engage and motivate learners.

Instructional Design: The methodical development of instructional specifications using learning theories which ensure only top-quality training.

Learning Management System (LMS): A system which tracks the administration, documentation, delivery and evaluation of eLearning content.

Learning Content Management System (LCMS): An easy-to-use repository system designed to create, manage and centralise learning materials.

Microlearning: Dividing masses of learning content into bite-sized pieces, so as to encourage learning at a manageable pace.

Personalised learning: Learning which is customised to individual needs, and which adapts to the learner themselves.

SCORM: The Sharable Content Object Reference Model is a traditional technical standard for eLearning software products.

Software as a Service (SaaS): The hosting of data and applications on a network which is accessible to users through the internet.

We understand that some of these terms are hard to retain on demand, so if you ever need to refer back to this glossary, find the link with ease on our landing page. If you have any questions about other terms which might not have been mentioned above, don’t hesitate to contact us.
